Our Philosophy

At Holistic Speech Pathology we embrace the uniqueness of every person and your innate style of communication. We focus on your lived experience, what is meaningful to you, and let your strengths guide our supports.

We believe in the power of relationships and offer care that embodies our values of a holistic, integrative, family centred approach to speech pathology.

A unique approach to speech pathology

Whole-being. Whole-body. Root Cause.

When there is dysfunction occurring somewhere in the body, it will be present elsewhere, too. Nothing occurs in isolation as the whole body is inter-connected and the relationship between speech, language, cognition, executive function, feeding, nutrition, nervous system function, breathing, sleep and oral function (just to name a few) is significant and relevant for all assessment and intervention in speech pathology.

We believe it is essential to find and treat the root cause of the dysfunction to create significant and long-term change. Providing education and working closely with other health providers as a multidisciplinary team, forms part of our holistic and integrative approach.

We believe in the importance of trauma-informed practice, the impact and significance of mental and emotional health/wellbeing, and the links between these and our ability to learn, communicate and connect with the world around us.

Parent & Carer Coaching.

Parents and carers know their children and family better than anyone, and we know that involving family and a support network as important partners in therapy is one of the keys to significant and lasting change. Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the more you can help your children and family members to learn, heal, grow and realise their full potential. We are here to empower you to become the expert in your family member’s care.

Parent and caregiver coaching involves a therapist educating and coaching parents and caregivers to learn and develop knowledge and skills that support their child or family member’s development in speech and language therapy. It is a well-established evidence-based approach, which supports and enhances parents’ and caregivers’ confidence and competence, in using intervention strategies and skills.

Why is it so powerful?

Speech pathologists generally get to spend between 45-60 minutes a week with a client. Parents and caregivers are with their family for many more hours. The most progress happens when parents and caregivers know how to use strategies to maximise everyday moments into opportunities for their child or family member to learn.

Nature-based Speech Pathology.

We like to take things away from the desk and encourage our clients to experience and enjoy new environments.

Nature and outdoor environments provide a powerful setting for therapy, and taking speech pathology outside is something we can all benefit from. Nature Based Therapy is an emerging field in both complementary therapies and holistic health treatment, which has been incorporated into the practice of many medical and allied health professions. There’s an abundance of research around now to back up the benefits of Nature Based Therapy. Collectively, this growing body of research shows that our social, physiological, academic, cognitive, mental/emotional and physical health is positively impacted when we have daily contact with nature.

Nature provides a calming effect on our nervous system and allows us to function in a regulated state which is optimal for learning. It provides an abundance of multi-sensory experiences to support the development of our cognitive foundations for learning - the network created in our brain through our sensory experiences with the world.

Time in natural outdoor spaces has also been shown to help our perception, focus, attention and connection to our environments and the people within them, allowing us to build more executive function, speech, language and social communication skills. It nourishes a sense of curiosity, wonder and awe which improves self-control and increases motivation, engagement and active participation. It also promotes physical activity, autonomy, play, creativity and problem solving and is a calm, quiet, safe place for learning.

It can be as simple as taking an activity on a picnic rug outside, playing at a park, going for a nature walk or gardening - speech and language happens everywhere and so much can be gained from simply taking our activities outside!

About Marni

Marni Vuister
Director & Speech Pathologist
BSpPath (Hons), MSPA, CPSP.

Hi, I’m Marni!

I am the Owner/director and speech pathologist here at Holistic Speech Pathology.

I am a mother with two young children, living with my family in the beautiful Sunshine Coast hinterland, Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi country in Queensland.

I found my way to speech pathology through my own experience of living with a communication challenge. I bring with me, a passion for holistic and integrative practice and working with clients, families, and community to help gain a better understanding of ourselves as humans. I believe addressing development, learning, and healing from a root cause, whole-body and mind approach is essential for our wellbeing and living a connected, meaningful life.

Connection through communication and mealtimes bring such depth and richness to this human experience. My intention for all my clients, is that they have access to safe, enjoyable and nourishing mealtimes and  communication in whatever form they need, whether that is speaking, reading and writing, sign language or Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

My experience extends across a broad spectrum of communication and feeding challenges over the lifespan, from developmental difficulties in early intervention, to complex disabilities and neurological rehabilitation. I’ve worked in diverse settings, including private practice clinics, telehealth, and within the community in homes, offices, childcare facilities, preschools, and schools.

My hope is that we will all continue to learn more about ourselves, how we innately connect with self and others, honouring our individual experiences, strengths and differences and use these to realise our full potential and live a connected and meaningful life.

I look forward to connecting with you,

Marni.
